Use note: This checklist is educational and provider-neutral. It is designed to help families compare options, document answers, and ask better follow-up questions.
When you finally get a callback from an autism provider, it helps to have one page you can print, save, or copy into your notes app. Use this checklist during intake calls, tours, consults, and waitlist conversations.
Quick provider scorecard
Write down the basics for each provider you contact:
- Provider name:
- City / telehealth availability:
- Service type:
- Contact person:
- Date called:
- Age groups served:
- Insurance / Medicaid accepted:
- Current waitlist:
- Next step promised:
1. Access and availability
Ask:
- Are you accepting new clients right now?
- What is the realistic waitlist for a first appointment?
- Do you offer telehealth, in-home, clinic-based, or school-based services?
- What ages do you serve?
- Do you have a cancellation list?
Red flags:
- Staff cannot explain the intake process clearly.
- Waitlist answers are vague or change every time you call.
- No one can tell you whether the provider actually serves your age group or insurance.
2. Insurance, Medicaid, and costs
Ask:
- Do you accept my commercial insurance, Medicaid plan, or waiver?
- Will you verify benefits before the first visit?
- What costs should I expect beyond the evaluation or session fee?
- Do you offer private-pay packages, payment plans, or sliding-scale options?
- If you are out of network, do you provide superbills?
Helpful next steps:
- Review your state's Medicaid autism coverage pages.
- Compare private-pay ranges in the autism evaluation cost guide.
- If funding is the main barrier, start with our financial help guide.
3. Clinical fit and philosophy
Ask:
- How do you set goals with families and autistic clients?
- How do you approach harmless stimming, sensory regulation, and communication differences?
- How do you respond when a child or adult says no, shuts down, or needs a break?
- What does progress look like in your practice?
- How do you coordinate with schools, primary care, or other therapists?
Strong signs:
- The provider talks about regulation, communication, autonomy, and family priorities.
- They can describe how they individualize care.
- They welcome questions about assent, sensory needs, and accommodations.
4. Evaluation-specific questions
If you are seeking diagnosis, also ask:
- Who completes the evaluation and what disciplines are involved?
- Do you use tools such as ADOS-2, developmental history, and cognitive testing when appropriate?
- How long does the process take from intake to final written report?
- Will the report include recommendations for school, therapy, or accommodations?
- Do you evaluate adults, girls, bilingual families, or high-masking clients if that applies to us?
Helpful links:
- Browse diagnostic services by state.
- Compare state wait pressures with autism waitlists by state.
5. Therapy-specific questions
If you are interviewing an ABA, OT, speech, or counseling provider, ask:
- How often are sessions typically scheduled?
- What parent or caregiver coaching is included?
- How do you track progress and share updates?
- What happens if the assigned clinician leaves?
- How do you adapt for sensory overload, AAC use, or co-occurring anxiety / ADHD?

6. Adult-service questions
If you are comparing adult programs, ask:
- Do you support employment, housing, transportation, or community participation?
- What eligibility documents are required?
- Are services funded through Medicaid waiver, vocational rehabilitation, SSI, or private pay?
- How long does onboarding take?
- What staff-to-client ratio or support level should we expect?
You can pair this checklist with our adult autism diagnosis guide and state adult services guides.
7. Questions for yourself after the call
After every conversation, note:
- Did they answer clearly?
- Did they respect our priorities?
- Did they explain waitlist, insurance, and next steps in plain language?
- Would I feel comfortable asking follow-up questions here?
